Whimsy Mosaics
My husband and I are longtime Montgomery County residents and mosaic artists. We have done two community mosaic public art projects through Wheaton Arts parade in Wheaton, DM, and we have also made a public mosaic for a Montgomery County councilmember that is located in the council office building in Rockville, MD. We were recently contacted by The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) to lead a community mosaic project that will take place at their annual Autism Acceptance event at Wheaton Regional Park on April 6th 2025. Although they really want my husband and I to lead this community mosaic project, they are unsure of how they can pay for it. If my husband and I receive a grant, it will go toward the Autism Acceptance community mosaic project. Per our conversation with M-NCPPC, my husband and I would do the majority of work at home and then leave a space so the community can complete the mosaic during the event. We would order mosaic materials right away and the entire mosaic would be completed by the end of April 2025 (I say the end of April because although the event will be held on April 6th, my husband and I will have to go back and put the finishing touches on the mosaic. This artwork is important because it will help promote diversity and inclusion and is a signal to our community that every individual is welcome and has value.
